Help with turning on and using Dimly.

Turn it on

  1. Open the Dimly app once.
  2. In Safari, open Settings, then Extensions, and tick Dimly. A welcome page opens where you choose when websites go dark.
  3. On the welcome page, click Allow on every website. Or, in Settings, set Other Websites to Allow.

Using it

Common questions

A page isn't dark. Click the toolbar button. If it says the site isn't allowed yet, click Allow on every website. If it says to reload, the page was open before Dimly could reach it. If your Mac is in Light mode, websites follow it unless you choose Always on.

A site that has its own dark theme looks different from usual. Open the popup, then Looks wrong on this site?, and choose This site is already dark.

A site was left light, but it isn't dark. Open the popup and click Not dark? Darken it anyway.

Something on a page looks wrong. Open the popup, then Looks wrong on this site?, then Fix this site…, and click the element: keep its original colors, invert it, or hide it. To undo a fix later, open the popup and remove it from the list of fixes.

A big page feels slow. Choose Use simple mode here in the popup. Very busy pages are switched to it automatically.

Can I hide the toolbar button? Yes. In Safari, choose View, then Customize Toolbar, and drag it off. Dark mode keeps working without it.

Some pages are never changed. Safari's own pages, PDFs and files opened from your Mac (file://) are off limits to all extensions.
